About CIRM

CIRM is the principal international association for companies engaged in maritime electronics, with current membership of over 100 companies from 30 nations worldwide.

Objectives

CIRM exists to promote the application of electronic technology to the safety-of-life at sea and efficient conduct of vessels, facilitating productive relationships between all stakeholders concerned with electronic aids to marine navigation, communications and information systems.

Background and status

CIRM was originally founded in Spain in 1928 by 8 companies engaged in the application of radio to the maritime service. It was reconstituted in Belgium in 1947 and subsequently moved to London.

CIRM is one of the nine original international bodies accredited in 1961 as a non-governmental organisation in consultative status to the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

CIRM is a Sector Member of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-R and ITU-T), and is a Liaison Member both of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). CIRM also enjoys mutual observer status with all the other relevant international and regional organisations, including the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO), the International Association of Lighthouse Authorities (IALA), the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), and the US Radiotechnical Commission for Maritime (RTCM)

We provide a specialist information service for our membersOur Technical Office is well-resourced and committed to providing members with the latest industry information, including a monthly Technical Bulletin.

We co-ordinate the views of our members in resolving regulatory issues and in the promotion of marine electronicsCIRM stays in touch with our members' opinions and ensures their views are fed into industry discussions.

We provide a forum for members to exchange information and business opportunityOur Annual Conference is well-attended and has a fantastic reputation for providing cutting edge technical and business-oriented content in an relaxed environment.

We work closely with major shipping associations to ensure that manufacturers are in touch with the views of their customersTo be a member of CIRM is to demonstrate a firm commitment to improving the usability of shipborne equipment in response to the needs of users.

We provide technical and industrial advice to the international regulatory organisationsCIRM holds observer, liaison, or consultative status with all of the key bodies.

We enable our members to participate in the development of international regulations and standards affecting their products and servicesCIRM is highly active in the work of international standards organizations, including IMO, ITU, IEC, IALA, IHO, etc.

CIRM is a not for profit organization Registered as company number 02494458 at UK Companies House. Members are welcome to inspect the company accounts by appointment with the Secretariat.
